Moravian Manor, in Lititz, Pa., is a distribution hub for the Power Packs Project. They provide ingredients and recipes for nutritious meals to low-income students and their families over the weekends. They also provide food staples, such as peanut butter and cereal, for children to eat over the weekends when school is out of session and the structured breakfasts and lunches aren’t available.
Joan Espenshade, founder and president of the Power Packs Project, found that students were coming to school with second-degree hunger on Monday mornings. Thus, these children were set up for academic failure before they even started the school day. I applaud Ms. Espenshade and the Power Packs volunteers for finding solutions, that don’t require government involvement, while helping the needy in our community. A hero in our midst!
