I just finished God and Government by Chuck Colson. I highly recommend this book for Christians who want to know what their “job” is in the public arena. If I could sum up this book in one quote, it would be this one by Martin Niemoller, a pastor in Germany during WW II:
“In Germany, they came first for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist. THen they came for the Jews, adn I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then, they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then, they came for the Catholics adn I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time, no one was left to speak up.”
I am afraid that’s what’s happening in today’s world. If you want traditional values and speak up for it, you get shot down by society. On the other token, I know lots of Christians who keep quiet because they don’t want to make waves. May we all heed Niemoller’s wisdom!
